MMSW has always been the poor red-headed stepchild to Final Draft due to inertia favoring the 'industry standard' (read: 'what everyone else is using') despite being comparable or superior on a features front. I don't see as many complaints on it as FD gets, though the people who complain about FD still shell out for upgrades and then gripe about those, too. But where MMSW really seems doomed is in their file import/export area. In replying to someone asking about using it with Fountain, I confirmed something that I'd always suspected but hadn't really examined because I was working solely in MMSW and hadn't been perusing other programs: MMSW is essentially an island unto itself where little can enter or leave. It can import Word and Word Perfect (for those unfrozen cavemen from 1990) and text with some competency, but Celtx, Fountain, even Final Draft are non-starters. Exporting is the same; you can make PDFs or go to production management software, but no go for Final Draft or anything else. Word can open Word Perfect files and vice versa IIRC.
South Park Mexican When Devils Strike Rar File more. (Note: I don't have FD, so I can't speak to its interoperability.) MMSW seems to believe that it can exist on its own and I don't see how that works anymore. Who should pay $169 for a program that doesn't play with anything else? Whatever FD's flaws may be, it's not as if you're locked into their format when everyone but MMSW seems to support FDR/FDX files. Unless MMSW comes out with a new version REALLY SOON with support for ALL major script program formats (including Fountain, Celtx and even FD), they're toast IMO.
A price cut would be nice, but if they want to play the 'premium' card at a high price, they need to build roads to their island. Otherwise Fade In for $50 seems the best deal. I hate having to look for alternatives to what I've invested time (used it since at least 2001) and money (fortunately I was able to buy in with an academic copy and upgrading to MMSW6 was very inexpensive), but when no one else but other MMSW users, what choice do I have? TL;DR: Movie Magic Screenwriter is no longer viable at pretty much any price (much less its premium pricing) when it can't import or export any of the major screenplay formats.
I wouldn't use MM. And it doesn't get mentioned much because it's so old.
They don't seem to want to ever update it. I've been using Final Draft 7 for awhile. I skipped 8 since it didn't seem much of an upgrade and went to 9. And 9 isn't much better, but there are a few things I like about it over 7, at least. FD9 seems slower too, but maybe it needs an update. My biggest complaint with FD is that some text get corrupted when I scroll, and I have to zoom in and out again to fix it for a bit.
It's been like this for a long time. I figured it would be fixed by now. Maybe it is for Macs. I don't know if other people have this issue, but it doesn't happen to me with Word or other screenwriting software, so it can't be my monitor or graphics card. We're so used to apps being updated quickly nowadays.
And both MM and FD seem to still be using a 20th Century software business model. If I didn't have Final Draft, I'd use Adobe Story or Fade In. I still might switch and only use Final Draft for formatting the. Final draft, as it were. Yeah, I regret getting the update to 9, but I got suckered into the 'upgrade to 8 and get 9 free' last fall. Normally, I wait for reviews, but just thought 9 would be a big enough leap after 10-12 years, or whenever it came out. And since 7 had a tendency to crash in Windows 7 and 8, I figured it was time to upgrade.
